A short time after coming into office, President Jacob Zuma stated that South Africa was suffering a “crisis of accountability”. But what, exactly, did he mean? There is an argument to be made that there are two different understandings of accountability in South Africa today. On the one hand, those who believe accountability merely means offering an explanation, on the other, those who believe it must be accomapnied by consequence. In the short conversation below, Lindiwe Mazibuko discusses this misunderstanding and its implications, among other things.
